STOP using banana and avocado together with fruit and chocolate in smoothies!

Many people include banana and/or avocado in their smoothies because of the pleasing mouth feel and creamy texture that they impart in the drink without having to use an alternative unhealthy fat source. These two foods also have significant nutritional value. However, what virtually nobody knows, outside of nutritional scientist geeks who study these things, is that both banana and avocado contain very high amounts of an enzyme known as “polyphenol oxidase”. As the name implies, this enzyme oxidizes (aka, degrades) the beneficial plant polyphenols responsible for many of the known health benefits of most fruits (berries in particular) and cocoa.

Use banana and avocado if you like them, as they do impart their own benefits. However, if you are adding them in a smoothie that also contains berries and other fruits, or cocoa (chocolate), you are negating much of the health benefits of those wonderful ingredients. You can consume all of these ingredients but separate your banana and avocado by at least 30-minutes from fruits/berries and cocoa.
